Silage makes up the largest share of the ration of high-yielding dairy cows, at the same time it is the cheapest feed necessary for nutrition. It is worth using them effectively.

Ensiling in a heap is a common method, due to the simplicity of its implementation. This is because all that is needed is a piece of vacant, non-wet land and a tight film.

Spread each layer of material brought from the field across the entire length of the pile in thin layers and knead accordingly. The harder the better. This process is designed to thicken the silage and get rid of the oxygen inside, which impedes the controlled fermentation process.

Remember to use “softer sides” – this will allow better compression of the ensiled material.

It is worthwhile to support the ensiling process. The use of ensilage additives during the formation of the heap will lower the pH in the ensiled mass, which promotes lactic fermentation and inhibits the breakdown of sugars. The additives also inhibit mold and yeast growth. Inoculants give better stability when picking and feeding the heap.
