We present the third episode in the series Close to the Breeder. Piotr Szybinski, director of the cattle department at Agrocentrum Group, together with Tomasz Kaliszewski, a nutrition advisor, visited breeders in Podlasie.

The beginnings of dairy farming

Michael took over the farm from his parents in 2006. A young farmer at the time, he decided to change his production profile to dairy cattle; his parents had previously raised sheep. It was quite a challenge, after all, he was starting from scratch. With his help came Ania. In 2013 the young couple got married and the farm spread its wings. The stock of dairy cattle increased, and milk production grew. In 2018 a free-stall barn was put into operation, which housed 100 milking cows. The facility was equipped with a 2×9 fishbone milking parlor, feed stations, and robots for grating pick-up and cleaning are also in operation.

The productivity of the herd oscillates around 10 thousand kg of milk, with parameters: protein – 3.6%, fat -4.1%.

The Krajewski family farms about 60 hectares. The farm’s sowing structure is spread about 50/50 between grassland and corn. Concentrated feed comes from purchase.

Women in agriculture

Women in the Krajewski family play an important role, after all, they dominate the family home. Ania and Michal have three daughters, Zosia, Alicia and Apolonia. The girls are 8, 6 and 2.5 years old.

Our three daughters are our pride. We hope they will continue our work.” – says Ania

Anna and Michal Krajewski with their daughters

Our oldest daughter is happy to help us on the farm, for example, she weaning calves. The girls also accompany their dad in field work, harvesting grass or corn together.

Anna comes from a family with a tradition of dairy farming. She was not afraid of working in agriculture. Despite her filigree stature, she copes well with farm work. Ania takes care of calf rearing, helps with milking and keeps the farm records. There is plenty to do!

Nutrition solutions for dairy cows

Our advisors support cattle farmers on a daily basis – TOGETHER we work to optimize production costs. We recommend the best feeding solutions tailored to the needs and capabilities of our customers.

Behind the high yields are perfectly composed feed rations. The basis is high-quality roughage: haylage and corn silage in combination with wet pulp and wet brewer’s thresh. The TMR ration is balanced with ensiled corn grain, grain middlings and protein components. In addition to basic minerals and vitamins in the lactation group, special attention is paid to cows being prepared for lactation. A specialized premix for dairy cows VitAgro Preparation is used, containing in its composition anionic salts, so important during this period.

From Agrocentrum’s offerings, breeders use a wide range of products for dairy cattle:

  • Agro Delicia
  • Agro Finezja
  • VitAgro Preparation
  • VitAgro Drying
  • Taste TMR

The primary feed for dairy cows given at the feed station is a specialized Agro Finezja feed mix, which replaced Agro Perfect 19, the farmer says. With this change, we increased the concentration of nutrients without increasing the amount of feed in the ration, which gave a significant increase in milk parameters.

For dairy cows in the perinatal period until confirmed pregnancy goes our top product – Agro Deliciamix – adds Tomasz Kaliszewski, who has been working with breeders for years. Calves, on the other hand, eagerly take Tasty TMR.

Agrocentrum nutrition service

Cattle breeders are open to cooperation, and are willing to receive nutritional advice. They take part in joint experiments. Regular nutritional service for dairy cattle helps optimize production costs. Tomasz Kaliszewski performs on-farm analysis on feed and fecal screens, urine pH control test and roughage analysis as needed.
