Body weight of calves

Cattle

1 min. czytania

The body weight of dairy cattle calves at birth usually ranges from 30 to 45 kg (varies depending on the breed of cattle).

The weight gain of a calf depends on many factors, i.e.: genetics, nutrition, environmental conditions.
It is assumed that a healthy calf should 𝗽𝗼𝗱𝘄𝗼𝗶𝗰́ 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝗲̨ 𝗰𝗶𝗮ł𝗮 𝗻𝗮 𝟲𝟬-𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝘇𝗶𝗲𝗻́ 𝘇̇𝘆𝗰𝗶𝗮.

At the Agrocentrum breeding farm in Lachow, daily gains are > 0.9 kg.

By feeding 8-10 liters/day of goitre of adequate density in the first 60 days of life, we are entitled to expect a doubling of birth weight at the end of this period. This is called early metabolic programming and has a lifelong effect on cow performance. A big help in achieving this effect will be a high-quality first calf feed.

In 2021, a record was set – an HF cow in the UK gave birth to a calf weighing 105kg! Interestingly, the calf was born 10 days after the scheduled due date. The birth took place via cesarean section.
